WHAT IS THE NDIS ?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), launched in 2013, is a modern approach to supporting Australians with disability. Its purpose is to ensure people can access the help they need, exercise their rights, and take part fully in the social and economic life of the community.

At its core, the NDIS aims to empower people with disability to work towards and achieve their personal life goals.

The scheme operates on an insurance model, recognising that early investment in individuals leads to better outcomes both for them and for society as a whole. The main feature of the NDIS is tailored, individualised support packages for eligible participants. It is not means-tested and is funded collectively by Australians. By the time the NDIS is fully implemented, it is expected to assist around 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability, helping them to live more independently.

For participants, the NDIS is designed to deliver tangible benefits — including increased independence, greater participation in employment, and more active engagement in community and economic life.

The NDIS is being rolled out gradually across all states and territories of Australia, ensuring equal access to support for eligible participants no matter where they live.

Eligibility for Funded Supports

To qualify for NDIS-funded supports, you need to:

What is the NDIS ?

The NDIS funds a broad spectrum of supports, including:

A support coordinator is someone who is funded through your plan, to help you understand and implement the funded supports in your plan and link you to community, mainstream and other government services. A Support Coordinator will focus on supporting you to build skills and direct your life as well as connect you to providers.

A Support Coordinator should work with you to link you to providers, they will help build your ability to exercise choice and control, to coordinate supports and access your local community. They can also assist you in planning ahead to prepare for your plan review.

No—NDIS eligibility is not based on income or assets. It’s an insurance model focused on disability-related needs, aimed at delivering long-term benefits for individuals and the community.
